President Obama Bombing for Peace is Like Fucking for Virginity

President Obama made a huge mistake last night in announcing 30,000 more troops going to Afghanistan. We will not be solving any problems in Afghanistan by sending more troops. We cannot win in Afghanistan. What we are facing in Afghanistan is not a military problem. We cannot win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people by bombing them.

I respect the idea that President Obama got in put from many sources in order to come to his decision, but he didn't hear from the Afghan people, who are sick of 30 years of war. Our military families cannot withstand the stress of two wars with multiple deployments. Our soldiers are committing suicide at ever increasing rates. Hundreds of thousands of our troops who have served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan have post traumatic stress disorder. It is past time for us to leave Afghanistan to solve its problems on their own. America cannot afford to stay in Afghanistan in blood or treasure.

I keep asking myself - what is it that Obama knows, that would make him decide to send more troops? Will this "surge" indeed facilitate a withdrawal of forces in 18 months?

I respect the fact that you went and protested. I'm still on the fence about is we should keep up the war. I don't know if Obama has it in him to win. Hopefuly the UN gets involved like they should. And Russia needs to kick in as much or more then we are. Without the rest of the worlds help I think we can not win. Obamas heart doesn't seem to be in it to win it. But I pray I'm wrong. Well now Obama is a warmonger just like Bush. If you don't have many protesters you will all look like a joke. Feel free to promote you protest on my blog even though I don't agree with it.

Obama must know more the his generals. Because they asked for 60,000 to 40,000 more troops. Maybe another country will take our place. Yeh like that will happen.

Chris, that's why there's a Commander in Chief that makes the final decision.

Military people always want to solve problems with military solutions when military solutions are not always the best solution.

I for one am glad President Obama actually invokes his Commander-in-Chief power of the Presidency. Field Commanders see every problem as a nail and every solution as a hammer.

More war is not the answer in Afghanistan.

What is the Answer to the problem in Afghanistan then?

The answer, Chris, declare victory and come home and start spending that money on domestic programs, like things that will give Americans jobs and health care for all Americans.

Chris - and perhaps Bruce as well - While I lean against sending more troops, I listen to President Obama saying in effect that there is a clear and present danger eminating from Al Queda and the efforts of the Talaban to continue to shelter them. I accept that at face falue. But timing is everything - and perhaps we are a day late and a dollar short of our original goal there. I will reserve judgement for the time being and see what the next year produces there. But no doubt Obama is on borrowed time and I for one will not cut him any slack there. Produce some concrete results or get out - that is my sentiment. In the meantime I will support the anti war protests if for no other reason than to show Obama that he has no wiggle room.

Mike, I agree that al Qaeda is a problem. However, there are only about 100 al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Pardon the pun, but it seems like overkill to send 100,000 soldiers to get 100 al Qaeda.

Special forces should be able to get the job done, if properly resourced.

There will never be an adequate Afghan army. Only 10% of the population is even literate. What they need is education, not bombs and bullets.
